How to Care for your Caned Furniture

We want the cane to last when we cane furniture for clients. On average, cane should last 5-25 years with regular use. That lifespan can shorten if not cared for properly. Here are our recommendations for caring for your caned furniture.

Why don’t we color it?

Caning and cord and rush fiber are plant products. They naturally darken with age. Adding chemicals like stain and finish can compromise the integrity of the piece, which is why we refuse to color cane for clients. We want your furniture to last, and, most importantly, we want to make sure you’re satisfied with the result.

What products should you buy?

Keep your cane moisturized and oiled. We recommend Murphy’s Oil Soap for cleaning (use as directed.) Use lemon, orange, boiled linseed, and mineral oil sparingly to keep your caning in good shape. Luckily, you don’t have to worry about applying it often. Once or twice a year should maintain the natural rattan supple and prevent it from becoming brittle. Periodic maintenance is all that is required.

How should you apply the oil?

Wipe the oil onto both the top and underside of the cane. Wait 20 minutes, then buff off the excess. Let it cure for at least 24 to 48 hours (preferably, you should wait over a day to be safe.)
