Designers know and artfully use layered lighting to help create the mood of a space. As a vintage furnitures studio and refinishing shop, here is our take on finish sheen as it relates to layered lighting:

Gloss Finish:

Reflects overhead lights and can cause glare. Great to use in the mix with other textures, just be aware of how it responds to light.

Satin + Matte Finish:

Absorbs light and creates softness and depth.

Satin is our go-to finish for residential refinishing projects. It gives enough sheen to let its presence be known, but avoids glares and adds to the comfort or a room. When we refinish pieces for clients, we talk through final sheen with them and decide together on which kind of finish they desire and might go best in their space.
